MJM

making a difference

At MJM, we are committed to supporting the community in which we live and work.

Our attorneys and staff contribute their time and expertise through pro bono work, supporting organisations such as the Legal Aid Office, and the Centre Against Abuse and the Bermuda Women’s Resource Centre.

Charitable Giving

We take a thoughtful and structured approach to charitable giving, supporting organisations with a strong local presence and a focus on helping underserved members of the community.

Our contributions are reviewed annually and guided by a dedicated internal committee to ensure consistency and meaningful impact.

Pro Bono Work

Our attorneys share a strong commitment to the provision of legal services free of charge for charitable purposes (“pro bono legal advice”) and MJM is committed to facilitating and encouraging such service.

It is because of pro bono service that many people are able to obtain access to justice that might otherwise be denied to them — it is a powerful force inside the practice of law.

We engage in a lot of pro bono legal work, including, but not limited to:

  • Bermuda Women’s Resource Centre
  • Bermuda Legal Advice Centre (Fozeia Rana-Fahy)
  • Bermuda Centre for Abuse
  • Age Concern (Hil de Frias, Denis de Frias)
  • Bermuda Ministry of Health, Seniors and Environment – Seniors Advisory Council
  • Bermuda Cancer & Health Centre
  • Bermuda Hospital Board Charitable Trust
  • Bermuda National Trust
  • Centre for Justice
  • Bermuda Sloop Foundation
  • The Bermuda Festival
  • The Bermuda Feline Assistance Bureau
  • Project 100 (Denis de Frias)
  • The Bermuda Foundation for Insurance Studies (Quorum Limited)
Civic Duty

Attorneys at MJM Limited demonstrate their civic duty by serving the community on several government boards.

The boards on which our attorneys now serve represent a broad sector of the community and governmental function. Recent appointments are as follows:

  • Bermuda Psychologists Registration Board
  • Employment tribunal
  • Fire Services Advisory Board
  • Bermuda Copyright Tribunal
  • Bermuda Fire Services Advisory Board

MJM is proud of its continued commitment to civic duty and encourages its attorneys to serve the community whenever possible.

Legislative Change Initiatives

Various practice leaders are instrumental in developing and drafting legislative change to enhance Bermuda’s offshore legal infrastructure.

  • Bermuda Business Development Agency (BBDA): Legislative change proposals
  • Bermuda Business Development Agency Trust & Private Client Group Executive (Attorney: Fozeia Rana-Fahy leads the group)
  • Companies Law Amendment: land holding powers for companies
  • Bermuda’s Labour Laws
  • Bermuda Casino/Gaming Laws
Community Events

Over the years, we have demonstrated our commitment to the community in which we live and work by taking a hands-on approach to community causes and charitable events.

At MJM we take great pride in giving back to the community. The firm tends to attract and hire caring people who are cognizant of the needs of others and who willingly take action to meet those needs. We consistently produce high staff participation rates in the charitable events we sponsor.

Age Concern Bermuda

MJM Limited has a history of supporting Age Concern Bermuda, a registered charity (#561) dedicated to meeting the needs of seniors in the local Bermuda community, by offering free legal clinics for Bermuda’s senior citizens.

Age Concern’s mission is to create the conditions that make the best of the lives of older citizens through information, advocacy and education in partnership with community organizations (ageconcern.bm). MJM takes a hands-on approach with these legal clinics as a way of demonstrating our commitment to making a lasting difference in the lives of the senior citizens in our community. Our partnership with Age Concern has developed to the point where MJM is a Link Partner, providing both financial and in-kind support.

For several years now, MJM attorneys have participated in the annual Age Concern free legal clinic. Attendees at this legal clinic are able to participate in a seminar on essential estate planning tools, sometimes led by MJM Partner Hil de Frias, as well as attend interview sessions with individual partners and attorneys from the firm, like Denis de Frias. The individual sessions are free, private, 20 minute appointments on Wills and Estate Planning, Power of Attorney, and Corporate matters. This event is just another example of MJM attorneys demonstrating their professional responsibility to serve underserved clients and goes to show that pro bono work is a powerful force in the practice of law today.
