Areas of Practice

David Adding­ton is a senior Char­tered Legal Exec­u­tive and is respon­si­ble for the man­age­ment and admin­is­tra­tion of the firm’s lit­i­ga­tion prac­tice group and all areas of the firm’s civil and crim­i­nal prac­tice. He has over 40 years of exper­tise in a broad range of lit­i­ga­tion work includ­ing com­mon law, equity, insol­vency, defama­tion, land­lord and ten­ant, com­pany com­mer­cial and insur­ance law, crim­i­nal law, admi­ralty and marine cases, fam­ily law, arbi­tra­tion and mediation.

Pro­fes­sional Experience

Prior to join­ing MJM in 1994 Mr. Adding­ton was lit­i­ga­tion man­ager for Appleby Spurl­ing & Kempe giv­ing him 30 years expe­ri­ence of Bermu­dian and inter­na­tional com­mer­cial lit­i­ga­tion man­age­ment. In the 10 years prior thereto he had been lit­i­ga­tion man­ager in Lon­don, Eng­land for Field Fisher Water­house (1963–1971); D. Miles Grif­fiths Piercy & Co. (1971–1973); Rubin­stein Nash & Co. (1973–1975); and S. Rut­ter & Co. (1975–1977).

Pro­fes­sional Activities

Mr. Adding­ton is an asses­sor for ILEX Para­le­gal Train­ing Ltd. and a lec­turer in law for the Bermuda Col­lege. He was the first recip­i­ent of the ILEX 2007 President’s Award for out­stand­ing ser­vice to ILEX and the legal com­mu­nity. He is a for­mer mem­ber of the Law Reform Sub Com­mit­tee on the rules of the Supreme Court of Bermuda and has served on var­i­ous other law reform com­mit­tees and is a con­trib­u­tor to pro­fes­sional jour­nals. In 2004 he was appointed a mem­ber of the Human Rights Boards of Enquiry. He is well known in Bermuda for his char­ity and church work hav­ing been chair­man in 1992 of the Bermuda Zone of the Inter­na­tional Asso­ci­a­tion of Lions Clubs and Mas­ter of Lodge Civil and Mil­i­tary from 1995 to 1997. His other appoint­ments include or have included Hon. Sec­re­tary of the Angli­can Church Synod of Bermuda 1996 to 2002; Chair­man of the Dioce­san Canon Law Revi­sion Com­mit­tee 2006 to present; past chair­man of the board of man­age­ment of the Bermuda Sailors’ Home Inc.; Hon. Chap­lain to the Home, the Mis­sion to Sea­far­ers and the Royal Naval Asso­ci­a­tion, Bermuda Branch hav­ing been admit­ted a Clerk in Holy Orders in 2001. His mem­ber­ships include the Lawyers Chris­t­ian Fel­low­ship, the Royal Soci­ety of St. George, the Royal Order of Scot­land and the Mariners’ Club.
